“While many have asked about the intent to ‘let this fire burn’, agency officials are quick to confirm that this fire is not being “allowed to burn” or managed for resource benefits. Fire managers established a goal to suppress this fire right from the start, but recognized that due to the hazardous conditions on the ground, there would be limited opportunities to utilize ground-based firefighters or air-based resources safely and effectively. Fire managers have identified natural barriers and changes in terrain and fuels where, as the fire moves into those locations, aggressive suppression actions will be immediately taken to prevent the fire from moving on to private lands.”

Note: That’s an interesting change of events. However, fire managers are NOT reporting, and/or the Northern Rockies Coordination Center (NRCC) has thrown a cone of silence over all information, due to the sensitive nature and National Security quality of that information. Nice job, Cone Heads!!!!

You have to admire the use of the term “agency officials” when obfuscating. Spin managers of uncertain parentage would be more accurate.

No maximum burn zone or estimated date of containment have been announced. A public meeting in Stevensville was held today to discuss the status of the Kootenai fire and long term plan being developed.

Fire is 2 miles S of the Whitney Fire [here]. The Desert Ridge Fire has not been reported by the Northwest Interagency Coordinating Center, although it has been burning for 2 weeks.

Fire crews burned out containment lines today. Active fire behavior is anticipated tomorrow. Expansive lava and pumice beds to S and E will limit fire spread in those directions.

This morning the S side of the fire was the most active. Both helicopters and airtankers have been flying continuously during daylight hours to extinguish hot spots to keep the fire perimeter from flaring up.

The Terrace Mountain Fire grew significantly yesterday due to wind; it is estimated to have grown 2500 hectares. The evacuation order has been reissued and extended. Firefighters were pulled back from endangered positions. More air and ground support is enroute.

The current active crown fire was not a result of the burning off activity; this fire burned over the fireguard that was built. Extremely dry fuels, wind speed, and wind direction all contributed to the fire’s vigorous growth.

A total of 26 lightning fires were ignited on the Inyo National Forest on Saturday, July 18, 2009. The Forks Fire, which is now approximately 3268 acres, started at 2:54 p.m. near Intake II, a small lake alongside State Route 168, 12 miles west of Bishop. The fire quickly grew in size and forced mandatory evacuation of all campgrounds, marinas, and pack stations in the Bishop Creek drainage, as well as the community of Aspendell. The fire crossed the state highway closing the road to traffic. Sunday winds shifted and the fire burned in the direction of the of Starlite, prompting a voluntary evacuation order for that community. An evacuation center was established at the Pine Street school in Bishop.

The mandatory evacuation of the Bishop Creek Canyon Recreation Area will be lifted on Tuesday morning at 10:00 am for business owners, special use permit holders, and residents of Aspendell and South Fork. Starlite will remain under voluntary evacuation. It is anticipated that the general public will be allowed to enter the Recreation Area either Wednesday or Thursday.

Starlite remains under voluntary evacuation. Residents who leave Starlite will be allowed back in if they have proof of residency and have a reason for returning home.

The Evacuation Center in Bishop has been re-located to Pine Street School.

This morning between the hours of 10:00 and 12:00 am, campers will be escorted in to the campgrounds that they were evacuated from in order to retrieve their belongings. All must be back out of the canyon by 1:00 pm. Fire managers and the Inyo County Sheriff’s Department will be evaluating the situation this afternoon and will attempt to make an announcement by 5:00 this evening regarding whether or not the evacuation will be lifted tomorrow.

From California Fire News [here]:

As of 8:00 PM on Saturday July 18th a total of 21 wildland fires have been sparked within the Inyo National Forest in the Eastern Sierra region of Inyo and Mono Counties. Most fires have remained small but one incident 12 miles west of Bishop has grown to 300 acres and has forced the evacuation of several popular campgrounds in the Bishop Creek drainage.

The Forks Fire was started by a lightning strike at about 2:30 PM near Intake II, a small lake alongside State Route 168, 12 miles west of Bishop. As of 8:00 PM the fire had burned about 300 acres with no containment at this time. A total of 9 air tankers has been ordered to help suppress the Forks Fire, in addition to numerous other local, county, state and federal fire fighting resources.

The evacuation of nearly 100 campers went smoothly, according to Inyo County Sheriff Bill Lutze, in part due to an early voluntary evacuation request shortly after the fire began. At about 5:30 PM a mandatory evacuation order was issued for four Forest Service campgrounds in the vicinity of the fire. Those campgrounds are the Forks, Big Trees, Intake and the Bishop Park Campground.

Also at about 5:30 PM the fire crossed the state highway closing the road to traffic. Law enforcement units escorted evacuees out of the area as the fire started to move north. Voluntary evacuation orders are still in place at numerous other Forest Service campgrounds in the area around Lake Sabrina, South Lake and North Lake. Local law enforcement officers remain in the communities of Aspendell, South Lake and Starlite to monitor the fire, however none of the residents of these communities are being considered for evacuation at this time.

As fire conditions permit, evacuees may be able to return to their campsites to retrieve their camping equipment. Evacuees may check at the highway road closure on State Route 168 for information on road opening possibilities.

This fire was not reported by the Northwest Interagency Coordinating Center until today, 07/19, although it has been burning for 2 weeks. The National Park Service adopted a Let It Burn strategy and the fire has spread into the Umpqua National Forest.

The Oregon State Police have been called upon to manage traffic on Highway 230 due to heavy smoke. Smoke has also choked Crater Lake in violation of the strict Clear Air Act provisions there. Human health and safety have been put at risk as Federal functionaries incinerate Oregon forests in secret Let It Burn fires.

Craig Ackerman, Crater Lake NP superintendent, is the official responsible for allowing the Whitney Fire to burn unchecked. His phone number is (541) 594-3000.

The Bridge Fire was allowed to burn unimpeded for a month. Then it blew up on 7/14. Whatever “resource benefits” were gained, they have been overwhelmed by costs and damages from a runaway wildfire.

Bryce Canyon N.P. closure of park service road 63 begins one mile after the main park entrance.

Direct suppression of south flank below the rim of Bryce Canyon, and continuing holding at the Whiteman Bench Road on the north flank. Air attack, 3 helos, 5 crews, 3 eng assigned; additional orders being filled.

No listing of this fire on InciWeb.

NE side of the fire has pushed over the Peterson Range onto the valley floor in the Rancho Haven area. W side of the fire is backing down the slope with a 1/4-1/2 mile flaming front. S side is backing down within 2 miles N of Cold Springs area. NW side is burning cross-slope to the NW.

Structure protection for both Rancho-Haven and Cold Springs is being monitored and handled through Reno Fire Department. Units are in the area and will continue to assess the situation and threat. Personnel reported at 4:40pm today (7/16) that the fire is making an aggressive run to the NE and is within 1 mile of closest structures; aircraft activity is increasing, and the fire is close to “trigger points” that would initiate an evacuation plan. Washoe County Sheriff’s Department SAR volunteers are prepared to contact local residents about the potential need to evacuate.

Mike Whalen’s Type II Incident Management Team will take over this fire at 0600 on 7/17.

Aircraft are being used to cool the fire ahead of the handcrews.

Hwy-395 is currently open with no controls. Travelers are requested to watch out for fire apparatus and vehicles in and around the fire area.
