The fire has reached less steep topography and is not actively spreading. The fire is backing slowing down slope to Yellow Jacket Creek. A wildland fire module is in place to provide structure protection, if needed.

Note that two days ago the GPNF stated that a confine and contain strategy would be employed “when the fire burns into terrain where crews can be safely deployed.” The fire has reached that terrain, crews have been deployed, but they are monitoring crews, not firefighting crews. This fire is going to be Let Burn until October, according to today’s announcement. Yellow Jacket Creek is well-roaded. The forest type is westside old-growth Douglas-fir.

Town Hall Meeting scheduled for 6:00 P.M., Wednesday, August 5, at the Lowman Emergency Services Building.

Late evening and early morning drift smoke low in the South Fork Payette drainage in the vicinity of Eightmile Creek could be hazardous to Highway 21 traffic, caution is advised. The Real Time Smoke Monitor installed by DEQ [on private property at the instigation of the private property owner, not the BNF] continues to monitor one hour running averages and mid-24 hour averages.

Today, a Type 1 Hotshot crew from Idaho City was flown to the ridge between Eightmile Creek and the East Fork of Eightmile Creek. Wednesday, the crew will begin to establish an anchor point and construct handline off of Eightmile Creek to secure the southern perimeter. Two Type 2 Initial Attack crews from Utah arrived and plans are for them to build handline up the east flank, working along the ridge line between Eightmile Creek and the East Fork of Eightmile Creek. Helicopter water bucket drops were made to successfully check the fire on the southern perimeter and on ridge line between Eightmile and the East Fork of Eightmile Creek. For the first time in a few days, a helicopter was available to GPS the fire. The fire was mapped at 922 acres as of 5 P.M., August 4. A helicopter and crew has been assigned to the incident for overall logistical support.

A Type 2 short team has been ordered, and will transition with the local Type 3 team on Thursday.

Lolo National Forest Firefighters were successful today in containing the Bald Hill Fire on the Superior Ranger District, keeping it to 65 acres. Mop-up today.

“Firefighters did an outstanding job of getting all these fires lined, said Superior District Ranger Sharon Sweeney, noting the efforts to keep in check the 10 fires on the Superior District. “We are expecting a few holdovers from that storm to show up today and tomorrow, and possibly even into next week.”

The successful effort of firefighters and suppression aircraft over the last two days has not lessened fire managers concern about the potential for an escaped fire. Continued high temperatures and low humidity are forecast for western Montana in the days ahead, with several weeks of fire season remaining.

Note: compare and contrast this fire and statements with the management of the Kootenai Creek Foofurb Fire [here]. That fire was ignited 7/13 and has been allowed to burn for 2 weeks. It is presently 760 acres and growing. No concern has been displayed by the Bitterroot NF about the potential for an escaped fire.
