Cause: Lightning

The area closure was lifted. Nearly all assigned resources were demobed on 8/2. The fire will continue to be patrolled by forest IA resources.

Made significant progress on the W, S and E flanks of the fire. Due to recent wet weather firefighters are going to proceed with direct line construction on the N flank of the fire. Minimal fire behavior, smoldering and creeping spread with isolated single tree torching.

Crews made progress in 2 DIVS tying in direct handline. Reconnaisance of road access out through private land for escape route for crews/equipment. Ordered 2 additional crews, excavator to support operations. Improving jeep trail on north end of the fire for contingency line.

Minimal fire behavior, smoldering and creeping spread with isolated single tree torching.

Area closure remains in place west of the Bitterroot Forest Boundary north to Gold Creek Campground (which remains open at this time). The Forest Service Engine and 2 private vehicles were successfully removed from Burnt Fork Lake early this a.m. after egress out the main road was cutoff by active fire behavior below Willow Mountain Lookout.

If weather conditions allow direct handline, then full suppression will be implemented. If due to the inaccessible terrain and active fire behavior continues; then a partial suppression tactic will be chosen based on the safety and effectiveness of the crews/equipment being deployed on the line’s capabilities.

Road closure of the Willow Mountain Road. Willow Mountain Lookout was evacuated. 2 USFS engines and 4 civilian were trapped behind the fire as it crossed the road. Helicopter had to evacuate 4 civilians and 5 USFS personnel. Vehicles were parked at the end of the road. Extreme fire behavior with crowning, running and torching.
