Lime Complex loaned a Skycrane which was utilized along with Martin Mars fixed wing for water drops. Short-range spots and numerous falling snags caused control problems on Division B slop over.

Active surface fire through heavy fuel concentrations, short crown runs, occasional torching and short range spotting up to 200 yds on isolated portions of the fire.

Seasonal curing of the vegetation may increase fire behavior, and areas that have served as a barrier may begin to carry fire. Vegetation curing combined with the mosaic nature of the burn, and the potential for internal burning and re-burning, could contribute the potential for large fire growth. Heavy smoke continues to impact local and regional communities, and can restrict the use of aviation resources for fire suppression and support. Terrain is steep and inaccessible, and safety zones are limited. Due to inaccessibility and long travel times, most operational resources are in remote spike camps and information and communications with ICP are a challenge.

On 7/11 the Yolla Bolly fires were subsumed into the Lime Complex [here]. Now they are their own unique fire complex again. Note that during the two-week hiatus the fires have increased in size ten-fold.

Larsen’s IMT began working on a Strategic Implementation Plan for the complex this afternoon. Note that the fires have been burning for more than month.

Several crews and engines arrived at the incident yesterday, flight conditions for air support have improved, and operational resources made progress building fireline today.

Remaining uncontained fires: Grouse Fire 1,901 acres with 0% containment, Yellow Fire 25,556 acres with 15% containment, Vinegar Fire 38,611 acres and 25% contained. IR confirms that the fires within the wilderness continue to grow daily. With the predicted hot and dryer weather, the potential for fire to move out of the wilderness remains.

The Yolla Bolly Complex now consists of the Yellow Fire (24,074 acres and 10% contained), Vinegar Fire (35,238 acres and 10% contained, Grouse Fire (1,660 acres and 0% contained), and the Trough Fire (3,686 acres and 100% contained).

Dave Larson’s Northern Rockies Type 1 Incident Management Team assumed command at 0600 this morning. The NRIMT was instrumental in burning 800,000 acres of Idaho forests last summer. They do not fight fires, they backburn in massive acreage chunks.

Reconnaissance and control line construction for burnout operations on the south and southwest portions of the Yellow Fire and southern portions of the Vinegar Fire are planned for the next operational period.
