This was the last operational day for Taskforce Shovel (National Guard).

The S flank of the Buckhorn Fire continues to actively back into the French Creek drainage. The SE flank has crossed Treloar Ridge as is backing into the Manzanita Creek Drainage. Roll-out, snags, and rugged terrain have limited tactical attack options. Direct and indirect alternatives continue to be scouted and implemented. Indirect line construction continues along Manzanita Ridge. On the Carey Fire, spot fires continue to be picked up and crews continue to hold along Eagle Creek. The Caraway Fire will be 100% contained at 1800 hours.

The Buckhorn Fire at 20,039 acres is 25 % contained. The Carey Fire at 2,614 acres is 40% contained. The Eagle Fire at 25,601 is 90% contained.

Firefighter Fatalities

Eight firefighters and one helicopter crew member are missing and believed dead in Tuesday’s helicopter crash on the north end of the Buckhorn Fire in Trinity County, a Federal Aviation Administration spokesman said today.

Some fatalities were confirmed earlier this morning by the U.S. Forest Service, which earlier had announced that nine people were missing after the crash.

Identities of the nine who are believed dead have not been released.

The helicopter pilot and three fire fighters were injured in the crash, which was reported at about 7:45 p.m. Tuesday near Junction City.

The Serious Accident Investigation Team continues their investigation on the firefighter fatality. Taskforce Shovel (National Guard) is assigned to suppression damage repair on the Zeigler and Ironside Fires.

Fire behavior remained active on the Buckhorn Fire. Crews are initiating direct line construction of the southern and southeastern flanks taking advantage of natural features. Type One Crews will be critical to the success of this action. There is an opportunity to take direct action and avoid the exposure and commitment of an additional 30,000 acres of the incident strategy that will impact the Highway 299 corridor as well as affected communities. It is estimated the crews will be needed for five days to construct four miles of direct handline. The probability of success for this mission is greater than 50% with the appropriate resources..

Increased fire behavior occurred on the Buckhorn Fire, with rapid rates of spread and spotting up to 1/2 mile. An interior snag caused a flare-up on the Denny Fire. Fencing was installed along the 16 Rd to help prevent rollout. Retardant use in the wilderness will be requested on the Buckhorn Fire.

Firefighter Fatality

REDDING, Calif. July 25, 2008 - National Park Service firefighter Andrew Palmer, 18, a firefighter with the Olympic National Park headquartered in Port Angeles, Wash. died while en route to Redding, Calif. this evening. He was being transported for emergency treatment of multiple injuries.

Forest Service officials learned of the fatality at approximately 5:45 p.m.

“Each and every member of the firefighting community feels a tragedy of this type. We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Andrew, who selflessly served to protect,” said Shasta-Trinity National Forest Supervisor Sharon Heywood.

Palmer was a firefighter assigned to the Iron Complex of fires on the Shasta-Trinity National Forest. The incident occurred on the southwest flank of the Eagle Fire late this afternoon.

“Andy was a dedicated and energetic firefighter who loved his job. We are all very sad, and our thoughts are with his family and the rest of the firefighters on this fire,” said Olympic National Park Superintendent Karen Gustin.

A Critical Incident Management Stress team is being set-up to provide support to fellow firefighters who may need assistance dealing with the loss.

Next of kin have been notified. An accident investigation board has been assembled by the Forest Service as well as the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) into the tragic occurrence.

Continued progress was made on the E and S flanks of the Eagle Fire south of Trinity River. The Don Juan Fire continued to spread up canyon to the east. Evacuations remain in effect for residents North of Hwy 299 in the Junction City Area). The voluntary evacuation order for Coopers Bar and Red Hill Rd. area has been lifted. Hwy 299 is subject to controlled traffic and temporary closure in the Del Loma and Cedar Flat area.

Broyles Type 1 IMT has arrived and has conducted in-briefing this afternoon. The transfer of command with Swartzlanders team will occur 06-29-08, 18:00 hrs.

Significant progress was made on the east flank of the Eagle fire south of Trinity River (5+ miles of control line), stopping further spread toward the community of Junction City. Burned out indirect line on the North flank of the Eagle fire. Evacuations remain in effect in the community of Junction City and surrounding area. The Don Juan fire spread up canyon to the east. Burnout operation will be initiated on the east flank of the Zielger fire tonight.

Type 2 IMT (Swartzlander). Reduction in acreage because the Clem, Green, Buckhorn, Granite, Denny, and smaller wilderness fires, ~1,800 acres, are now in the Alps Complex [here] managed by Soper’s IMT.

Evacuation orders have been issued for the community of Junction City. The Eagle fire is now threatening the community of Junction City.

Uncontained fires range from 200 to 6,400 acres each. Fires are very active in the afternoon with wind and slope. Communities or multiple dwellings exist near area’s of all fires not in the Wilderness. Fires along Hwy 299 are impacting traffic and fire suppression activities. West side of Junction City will continue to be under threat all day as well as Canyon Creek residences and other structures along the Hwy 299 corridor. Ziegler Fire is burning above the community of Hawkins Bar. The Cedar Fire and the Ironside Fires could threaten Burnt Ranch. Don Juan Fire will likely continue to burn down to Hwy 299.

Type 2 IMT (Swartzlander). Unstaffed fires continue to grow. Accessibility is a problem due to difficult terrain along with many forest roads being closed by blow down. Approximately 11 of 36 fires are in the Trinity Alps Wilderness area. Many of the fires will require type 1 crews and air support. Several groups of fires are burning together and consolidating specifically on the Ironside Mtn., and the Green Mtn. Inversions and smoke in the canyons are limiting the use of air resources. Suppression action is occurring on the Eagle Fire, the Cedar Fire, Canadian Fire, and the Dedrick Fire. Point protection is occurring on the Ironside and Ziegler fires. The Half fire from the Six Rivers has come onto the Shasta-Trinity NF and Six River resource are taking suppression actions. One new fire was Initial attacked, 3 miles west of Junction City on Hwy. 299, the Cutthroat fire was contained at about 50 acres. Within the next 12 to 72 hours a total of 6 residential area’s will be threatened.
